This three-day, accredited Managing Risk course gives you the tools to identify, assess, and respond to potential threats within your unit. You'll discover how to analyze risk factors, determine their impact, and prioritize them for action. Through practical exercises, you'll develop contingency plans that align with your organization's policies and procedures, and learn how to test and refine those plans for maximum effectiveness. By the end of the course, you'll be equipped to create a proactive, resilient environment that safeguards critical processes and supports overarching organizational goals.

This short course is aligned to cover the specific outcomes of unit standard 252025 - Monitor, assess, and manage risk, at NQF level 5 for 8 credits. This course is part of Module 8 in the Generic Management Qualification ID 59201. It is intended for any manager in an organisation to monitor, assess and manage risk.

After attending this course and being found competent in all of the assessment activities, you will be able to:

Explain how business processes function within a unit and identify the risks that can arise.

Determine the likelihood and potential consequences of risks to prioritize effective responses.

Design and implement comprehensive contingency plans aligned with organizational standards.

Evaluate and refine contingency plans to ensure ongoing relevance and effectiveness.

This accredited managing risk course is perfect for managers in any economic sector who want to strengthen their risk management skills. It's especially relevant if you're a second-level manager—like a head of department, section head, or divisional head—with multiple teams reporting to you.

 

Pre-Requisites

 

It is assumed that learners who enrol on this course are competent in:

 

  • Communication at NQF Level 4.

  • Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 4.

  • Computer Literacy at NQF Level 4.

 

Course Outline / Curriculum

 

Module 1: Demonstrate an Understanding of Potential Risks to a Unit

  • The concept of risk is explained with reference to accepted theory and practice. 
  • The factors that could constitute risks to a unit are identified and explained. 
  • The role of organisational policies and procedures are explained in relation to risk management. 

 

Module 2: Identify Potential Risks and Assess the Impact thereof in a Unit

  • Potential risk factors for critical processes in a unit are identified and documented
  • Possible scenarios that could constitute a risk are identified and documented
  • The possibility of each scenario occurring is evaluated and recorded for future use
  • An analysis is performed and documented to rate the impact of each scenario on a unit
  • Priorities resulting from the impact analysis are determined and documented for implementation in the event of the risk materialising

 

Module 3: Develop Contingency Plans for Managing Risk

  • Contingency plans are developed and documented in accordance with the entity's policies and procedures
  • Contingency plans are communicated to relevant stakeholders in accordance with the entity's risk management procedures
  • Contingency plans are distributed and stored in accordance with the entity's risk management procedures

 

Module 4: Test and Revise Contingency Plans

  • Contingency plans are tested in accordance with the entity's risk management procedures
  • Recommendations on improvements to the contingency plans are documented in relation to the findings of the testing
  • Contingency plans are revised to incorporate recommendations from the testing in accordance with the entity's policies and procedures
