Audience

This course is ideal for individuals new to the workforce, recent Matric graduates, or entry-level employees looking to build foundational project management skills. It’s also beneficial for small business owners, junior team leaders, or anyone seeking a clear, structured introduction to planning, executing, and monitoring projects at a fundamental level.

Pre-Requisites

No Project Management experience is necessary.

You need to have communication and numeracy at NQF level 3 (Grade 11) to meet the entry requirements for this course.

  1. Nature of a Project
    • Recognize what sets projects apart from routine operations.
    • Explore a project’s typical life cycle and the reasons organizations undertake projects.
    • Understand different project types and their complexities.
  2. Project Management Fundamentals
    • Define project management in line with recognized international standards.
    • Distinguish between project management processes (planning, executing, monitoring, closing) and technical tasks required to produce project deliverables.
    • Compare project management with general management, including key roles and responsibilities within a project team.
  3. Project Environment Structures
    • Learn why structuring a project is crucial (e.g., program and sub-project hierarchies).
    • Discover how breaking a project into manageable components (product/work/cost breakdown) enhances clarity and efficiency.
    • Understand the benefits of a well-defined framework for coordinating tasks and stakeholders.
  4. Organizational Structures and Roles
    • Differentiate between functional and matrix organizational structures, noting how each impacts project setup.
    • Map out a typical project organization chart, including the responsibilities and reporting lines for roles such as project sponsor, manager, and team members.
    • Identify various stakeholders, understanding their unique interests and contributions.
  5. Major Project Management Processes
    • Cover the essential stages of managing a project: initiation, planning, execution, monitoring/control, and closure.
    • Explore additional management sub-processes (scope, risk, quality, communications, scheduling, cost control, stakeholder engagement, procurement).
    • Learn why diligent planning and control are critical, including the potential consequences of neglecting these elements.
