In our personal and work lives, we are often confronted with situations where there are opposing opinions and high emotions, and high stakes, and we are faced with having a difficult conversation. We can do one of three things:
- Avoid them: often the short-term, easy way out many of us choose.
- Face them, and handle them badly: lose our cool, or retreat into silence.
- Face them and handle them well: but we need the skills to do this!
This workshop will arm you with a suite of skills that when practiced and mastered will transform your ability to conduct courageous conversations that have a positive outcome.
The style of this workshop is interactive, with several breakout sessions, video clips and case studies included to keep delegates engaged.
This workshop is facilitated by a communication expert.
Leading Training is focusing on providing virtual training courses for the foreseeable future and will only consider in-person and classroom training on request, with a required minimum group size of six delegates. We remain committed to offering training that is fast, focused and effective.

The facilitator was well-informed/ knowledgeable and allowed enough room to engage with delegates. The sales consultant we had on the day of training Kerrin Badham was also engaging with delegates providing guidance and ensuring course manuals were received.
You need to be a human who cares about having better conversations with others.
Welcome, Contracting, Introduction, and Expectations
Icebreaker: “How skilled do you have to be?”
This activity makes the point that you have to strive to be “unconsciously skilled” to do courageous conversations well.
The Power of Dialogue
The dialogue style of conversation is the lingua franca of effective courageous conversations – as it is of so many other fields of human endeavour such as inspirational leadership, coaching, and change management. So we will spend time understanding and practicing the art and science of Dialogue.
Courageous Conversations (CC): Let’s do it!
Getting exposed to the CC toolkit
Start with the Heart
Make sure your intentions are noble!
Learn to Look
CCs must be dialogues, and one must be very careful to spot when things are drifting into “silence or violence” mode.
Make it Safe
Use techniques to restore the safe dialogue space.
Master my Stories
Make sure the “story” you are telling yourself about the situation is factual rather than fantasy.
STATE my Path
An acronym to help you share your tough message effectively.
Explore Others’ Paths
Use powerful listening and questioning skills to hear out the other side’s story.
Move to Action
Never forget to finish off all the hard work with agreed actions.
“What you don’t have can’t leak!” - Hazard Elimination
This section covers what organisations can do to minimise the frequency of incidents that require Crucial Conversations. This involves mastering skills such as effective change leadership, inspirational leadership, trust, goal clarity and alignment, empowered accountability, teamwork and collaboration, the rebirth of MBO as OKR, and prioritisation.
Tick all these boxes, and there won’t be much need for CCs very often.
And now? - Next Steps
So what are we going to do about all this to immediately improve our CC capability, and hone it into an “unconscious skill”? Delegates will be introduced to the self-managed Learning Triads concept to encourage continuous learning.
There are currently no scheduled dates.
