Course Outline / Curriculum
Communication Basics
To start, participants will discuss the characteristics and behaviours that they believe make a good communicator. Then, they will go over a simple communication model to better understand what factors influence successful communication.
Communication Barriers
After analysing a case study, participants will discuss barriers to communication. We will then unpack Hofstede's dimensions to better understand cultural differences and how they might be a barrier to communication.
Asking Questions
Understanding what someone is truly saying, and not assuming their message, is a crucial part of accurate communication. We do this by asking good questions. In this section, participants will learn how to ask questions politely and effectively.
Listening Skills
Hearing and listening are often different things. This section will help participants to pay attention and communicate that they are listening to a speaker.
Body Language
Our gestures, eye contact, posture, clothing, and proximity to people communicate messages to others. In this session, participants will learn important principles to keep in mind while communicating.
Creating a Positive Self-Image
The way we present ourselves tells others about us. Participants will evaluate how they are currently portraying themselves, and whether they would make a change.
Frame of Reference
The way we frame a situation has a big impact on how we interpret it. Participants will learn how to challenge their frames of reference to think more clearly.
Assertiveness
How we see ourselves has an impact on how we interact with others. This session will investigate ways that participants can improve their self-image and thereby deal with difficult situations assertively and positively. They will also learn formulas to help them structure their communications to be as effective as possible.
